Summer Pell Grant Availability
- Due to changes in the federal budget, Summer Pell is no longer available for most students.
- Only students who did not use their full Pell award during the Fall, 2011 and Spring, 2012 semesters will be eligible for any “leftover” Pell for the summer semester.
Federal Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility
Because of a new federal law, students are limited to 12 semesters (six years) of Pell grant eligibility during their lifetime. This change affects all students regardless of when or where they received their first Pell grant. For example, if you received a full time Pell grant for 8 semesters (4 years) at BMCC, you would be limited to 4 semesters (2 years) at another college or university.
The Department of Education is tracking your lifetime eligibility percentage. Since the maximum amount of Pell grant funding a student can receive each year is equal to 100%, the six-year equivalent is 600%. For example, if you received a full time Pell grant for 2 semesters, you used 100% for that year. In the next year, if you enroll at three-quarter time for 2 semesters, you used 75% for that year. Together, you would have used 175% out of the total 600% lifetime limit. You can determine how much Pell you have used and what you have remaining at www.nslds.ed.gov or by contacting BMCC’s Financial Aid Office.
You must plan now for your future, especially if you plan to transfer to a four year college and pursue a Bachelor’s degree. Complete your classes and stay on track with your academic plan to attain your Associate and Bachelor’s degree within the six year lifetime limit!

In order to be certain that you do not have a delay in your PELL award OR a problem getting a charge approval for books, please be aware that BMCC is encouraging students to apply EARLY for FAFSA. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. The BMCC school code is: 030666. The best way to insure that there is no hold up on your PELL award is to complete your FAFSA application as soon as you have your taxes done. We recommend that you submit the FAFSA by March 1 so that you’ll meet the priority deadline of completing your financial aid file by June 30. Applications completed after March 1 will still be processed but should additional paperwork be required, such as verification documentation, your award may be delayed. |
