Welcome Back Students/Staff:

Welcome back returning TR i O students and a welcome to our newstudents as we begin a new year at BMCC! TR i O is very busy planning activities and events. We are short staffed but will be filling the other TR i O Advisor position shortly. Make sure you check out all the sign-ups and attend activities.

New TR i O Intern

Hi! My name is Elizabeth Allen and I am the new student intern for Deb LeBlanc. My desk is down in the TR i O Computer Lab. If you have any questions and Deb is not available don’t hesitate to ask me. This is my first year at BMCC as I just graduated from Sault High. I look forward to meeting new faces and having a great time this year.

Fall Retreat

This year the Fall Retreat will be held on Friday, October 17th at the LSSU Cisler Center from 10 A.M thru 2 P.M. The Fall Retreat is casual dress and includes free lunch and gifts. There will be quest speakers and, as always, students who have children are welcome to bring them. A sign-up sheet is posted down in the TR i O Computer Lab in the basement of the library. Hurry and sign-up!

Tutoring

Tutoring is available to all TR i O SSS students in the TR i O Computer Lab. If you have a GPA below 2.7 you are REQUIRED to attend tutoring through the TR i O SSS program. Our Professional tutors hours are:

Joyel Hyvarinen : All Math classes-Mondays from 4 to 7 P.M.

Kelly Slater: All English classes-Wednesday from 5 to 8 P.M

Volunteer Opportunities

The American Red Cross is having a Blood Drive on Wednesday October 15, 2008 from 11-4:45 P.M. at the Waishkey Center. The sign-up sheet is in the TR i O Computer Lab. We need help setting up tables and chairs, unloading, reloading, registration, and refreshments. Come sign-up to save lives!

Are you interested in volunteering to become certified for a life saving skill? Come to the Free CPR training Friday, October 10 th, 2008 from 9AM-1PM. It will be held in Rooms 110-111 of the Mikanuk Building resulting in Certification for Adult CPR. There is a sign up posted in the TR i O Computer Lab. See Nikki Dowd for additional information.

Haunted Hallway- The Boys and Girls Club is looking for anyone interested in helping decorate for the Haunted Hallway for Halloween. Decorating days are Wednesday October 29 th between the hours of 9AM and 5PM and Thursday October 30 th between 10AM and 10PM. Please sign up down in the TR i O Computer Lab.

Paul Rusesabagina: The Real Effects of Discrimination and Public Complacency

Paul Rusesabagina single-handedly prevented the slaughter of thousands of refugees at the Mille Collines Hotel for 100 days during the Tutsi genocide in Rwanda. He will be speaking at the Arts Center at LSSU on October 30 th from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM. The movie “Hotel Rwanda” was based on his story and inspiration. If you would like to attend this event please sign up in the TR i O Computer Lab for a ticket. Please note that students selected to receive tickets will need to provide their own transportation.

Openings in TR i O

There are still openings for students to join the TR i O SSS Program. Qualifications include: being a first generation college student (if your parents don’t have Bachelor’s Degree or didn’t have one within the first 10 years of your life), being low income, or having a disability. If you are already in TR i O and know someone who is interested refer them to Deb LeBlanc to get an application.
