Fall Retreat
On October 19, 2007 TRiO held its annual Fall Retreat. Overall the Retreat was a success. Unfortunately, out of the 50+ students who signed up for the Retreat only 24 actually came. For those of you who didn’t go you missed out on good food, fun activities and prizes. Tara Hetrick won the grand prize which was a Dell printer. Other prizes included: TRiO USB drives, calculators, staplers, etc. Everyone who attended the Retreat received an autographed copy of “How to Stay Motivated During Difficult Times" written by, Andres Lara, aka “The Cuban Guy”, this years guest speaker for the Retreat. The group participated in some outrageous activities that taught a little life lesson.
New Registration Process for BMCC’s Virtual College
In the past, BMCC’s on-line registration has been “open.” This means that students could register for classes at any time, and begin their course work as soon as they received a welcome letter from the Virtual College Coordinator. This process allowed scheduling flexibility. However, collaborating between students was nearly impossible. The new on-line registration policy for “Planned Registration Dates” will go into effect winter semester 2008. Students can then only register for courses only during the designated dates.
January 7-18, 2008-course work begins January 21, 2008
March 3-14, 2008-course work begins March 17, 2008
May 5-16, 2008-course work begins May 19, 2008
July 7-18, 2008-course work begins July 21, 2008
September 8-19, 2008-course work begins September 22, 2008
November 3-14 2008-course work begins November 17, 2008
Transfer Trip to NMU
On December 13-14, 2007 students can go on an over-night trip to visit the NMU Campus. Activities on this trip include: a walking tour of the campus, visiting an Art Show, a horse carriage ride, some shopping, eating at great places and swimming in the motel pool if you like. Any questions ask Kelly or Nikki. A Sign-up sheet is posted in the TRiO Computer Lab.
TRiO Workshop
TRiO will be holding a Workshop on Thursday, November 8th from 9:30am to 11:30am in room 110 located in the Mikinuk Building. The workshop is called “Real Experience for the Real World.” This workshop will give you information on Group participation and Volunteerism and what it can do for you. Refreshments will be served and you can stop by the workshop at any time.
International Leadership Training Program
TRiO College Students have the opportunity to be in a European Study Program. The program starts June 9th to June 29th 2008. You will explore issues of concern to UK and US citizens and also get the chance to meet and work with young people from local schools, community groups and the local refugee community. Students interested must fill-out an application. Applications can be picked up in the TRiO Computer Lab. All applications must be turned in by January 15, 2008. A flyer is posted on the Volunteer Opportunities board in the Computer Lab. For more information or for any questions come see Deb LeBlanc.
TRiO Numbers are LOW!
Students if you know somebody who is not already in TRiO SSS direct them to the TRiO Computer Lab so they can fill-out an application. To be eligible for TRiO you must be a first generation college student (neither parent has a four-year degree) and disabled (a learning disability or physical disability). Each student referrind someone to TRiO will receive a flash drive after that person's in-take appointment and their first appointment with their advisor is done.
