TRiO Volunteer Opportunities
There are many opportunities available to complete your required community service hours. On Saturday, October 14th there is a Bowl-A-Rama to raise money for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Fundraising packets can be picked up from TRiO Student Intern Brie Blaauw. On Tuesday, October 17th there will be a Red Cross Blood Drive in the Mikanuk Building. Volunteers are needed from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. You may also donate blood. Please see Nikki to schedule an appointment. On Saturday, October 21st the annual Walk for Warmth will be taking place. Please see Nikki Dowd for fundraising packets. All sign up and informational sheets are posted in the TRiO computer lab.
Upcoming TRiO Trip
Nikki Dowd will be taking a group of students to the Ann Arbor area to visit the University of Michigan from Thursday, October 26th to Saturday, October 28th. There is a sign-up sheet in the TRiO lab if you are interested. Please see Nikki if you have any questions.
TRiO SSS Fall Retreat
This year’s retreat will be held on Friday, September 29th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Cultural Lodge. There will be door prizes and lunch will be provided. Please dress casual (jeans etc. are ok!). There is a sign up sheet in the TRiO Computer Lab so sign up as we need a head count for food. Please plan on attending!
New and Returning TRiO SSS Students
All new and returning TRiO SSS students will need to update their Student Success Plans for FA06. TRiO Students need to schedule appointments with their TRiO advisor before being eligible for TRiO funds, to go on trips or to check out laptops and calculators. TRiO students must be active participants in TRiO SSS for services.
Professional Tutors
Professional tutoring will take place by the TRiO Computer Lab. Judy Webb will again be tutoring for all English classes. She will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11-12 pm and 2:30 – 3:30 pm. Joyel Hyvarinen will be tutoring for all Math classes. She will be available on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 – 7 pm. If you have any questions, please see Deb LeBlanc in room #122.
TRiO Staff to attend Conference
All TRiO staff will be gone from Thursday, November 3rd through Wednesday, November 8th. They will be attending the MAEOPP Regional Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program
If you are interested in continuing your education to earn a Ph.D., the McNair Scholars Program is for you! Please see Deb in room #122 for a once in a lifetime opportunity!
New TRiO Policy
It looks as if any student that earns their associates degree at BMCC while they are in TRiO, will no longer be eligible for TRiO services after their graduating semester. These are changes that will probably be implemented by the Department of Education. President Bush continues to try and eliminate TRiO programs and is using many avenues to do so. Any questions or concerns can be answered by Deb in room #122. Please register to vote!
