TRIO SSS Fall Retreat

This year’s retreat will be held on Friday, October 7th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Cultural Lodge. Scheduled events include a renowned jazz flutist who has performed around the world. Galen will be doing a lecture/performance. Please check out his website at: www.flutejuice.com. Galen, a master flutist from Longwood, FL, is a major entertainment figure on college campuses and is known for his intellectually stimulating lectures and powerful jazz vault performances. There will be a buffet lunch and door prizes. Please dress casual (jeans etc. are ok!). There will be a sign up sheet in the TRIO Computer Lab so either sign up or e-mail Deb at dleblanc@bmcc.edu to be added to the list as we need a head count for food. Please plan on attending!

Second Annual State Policy Seminar

Deb will be selecting a few students to represent our TRIO SSS program in Lansing at the Second Annual State Policy Seminar on September 13-14. These students will be joining TRIO students from around Michigan to meet with our state representatives and senators to share what TRIO has done for them. They will also tour the capitol and several colleges/universities in the
Lansing area. Tentatively scheduled are Lansing Community College, Cooley Law School and Michigan State University. A cultural event may also be included.

(CONTEST IS OVER)

TRIO SSS Student Survey

You will be receiving a survey in a few days. Please make sure you fill it out and return it as soon as possible. It is very important for our TRIO program to get this input for our stats. All students that return their surveys by the due date will be entered into a prize drawing for a variety of prizes! Winners will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail.
Seeking New TRIO Students

If you know any students that are: first generation, pel grant eligible, have a disability, have attended or been advised to take an AE class, are working toward a degree, or meet some of the criteria above, please have them call Deb as soon as possible. She can then determine eligibility for TRIO SSS and do an intake before Fall semester. We do have some openings in TRIO for students that meet certain criteria as we need to meet our stats.

Good news!

The House of Representatives has passed HR3010 which restores current funding for ALL TRIO Programs! Previously, Upward Bound and Talent Search had been deleted in the budget for the next fiscal year. This had caused a major concern for ALL TRIO programs as it could have ended up affecting more of us down the road once the door was opened. The bill also reinstated full pel grant funding which had been previously reduced by $500 for each student.

TRIO Staff News

Congrats go out to Nikki on the arrival of her new baby girl! Adeleigh Kay was born on 6/26 at 2 am. She was 7 lbs and 11 oz and 20 inches long. Nikki will be home for several weeks bonding with her new daughter.

Deb’s summer schedule is Wednesdays and Thursdays although every other week she is here on Tuesdays. If you want to see her just call or e-mail her first to make sure she’s in that day. She does check her e-mail daily.

Kelly is in and out during the summer but checks her messages frequently. Again, if you want to see her just give her a call and leave a message. She will return your call.

Angie is here most Wednesdays and Thursdays. It looks promising that Angie will be here thru the next school year!

Deb and Angie have been busy wrapping up this school year and planning the events and trips for the upcoming year. It looks to be an exciting one!

Coming Soon

TRIO SSS will soon have its own area under Bay Mills Community College’s website which is undergoing major renovation. You will be able to click into TRIO on the college’s website and access past events, newsletters, and upcoming events. There will also be a blurb on what TRIO is and the services that we offer. Once the new website is fully operational we will no longer be mailing out the monthly newsletter. You will be able to access them on the website. It will be very important that you do so so that you know what’s going on!

TIDBITS:

We hope you’re able to take a break from your studies and job and enjoy the summer with your family and friends!
