TRiO SSS Fall Retreat

This year’s retreat will be held on Friday, October 7th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Cultural Lodge. Scheduled events include a renowned jazz flutist who has performed around the world. Galen will be doing a lecture/performance. Please check out his web site at: www.flutejuice.com. Galen, a master flutist from Longwood, FL, is a major entertainment figure on college campuses and is known for his intellectually stimulating lectures and powerful jazz vault performances. There will be a buffet lunch and door prizes. Please dress casual (jeans etc. are ok!). There will be a sign up sheet in the TRiO Computer Lab so either sign up or e-mail Deb at dleblanc@bmcc.edu to be added to the list as we need a head count for food. Please plan on attending!

Upcoming TRiO Trips

The Last Hurrah!!!!!!
A Chicago Trip:

Plans are in the works for a TRiO trip to Chicago! We will be leaving the morning of Wednesday, August 24th and returning the night of Saturday, August 27th. We will be staying at the Chicago- City Centre (Navy Pier) and plans include the John Hancock building, Field vault Museum, Shedd Aquarium, ALder Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, Chinatown, Navy Pier, Imax Show, Bubba Gump's, Pizano's Chicago style pizza, a Broadway performance of "The Lion King", riding the EL, and the Latin Music Festival. Please contact Deb or Angie AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you want to go!!! You will need to fill out 2 forms right away. There will only be 8 students picked to go. This is an all expense paid trip for TRiO students as are all of our trips. Deb's email: dleblanc@bmcc.edu and Angie's.

Second Annual State Policy Seminar:

Deb will be selecting a few students to represent our TRiO SSS program in Lansing at the Second Annual State Policy Seminar on September 13-14. These student swill be joining TRiO students from around MIchigan to meet with our state representatives and senators to share what TRiO has done for them. They will also tour the capitol and several colleges/universities in the Lansing area. Tentatively scheduled are Lansing Community College, Cooley Law School and Michigan State University. A cultural event may also be included.

Mackinaw Sunset Cruise was fun!

The following ten TRiO students and Deb Leblanc went on a beautiful sunset cruise through the Mackinac Straits: Julie Timmer, Karen Bergeron, Cassie Ellis, Tom Teeple, Matt Vance, Marie Gregg, Angela Klein, Samantha Small, Patty Cooper, Jamie Verwiebe, and Angela Peltier. They enjoyed hors d'oeures while listening to traditional music by the "Rythym Billies." Everyone had a great time. See picture below of Samantha Small, Patty Cooper, Matt Vance and Angela Klein.

New Student Orientation:
August 25th 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Classes Begin Monday, August 29th.

***Students that register late will be charged a $50.00 LATE FEE so if you haven’t registered yet you need to register this summer. ***

Professional Tutor Hours

Professional tutoring will take place by the TRiO Computer Lab. Judy Webb will again be tutoring for all lower Math and English as well as Business classes. She will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11-12:30 pm. Paul Ripple (new Science instructor) will provide tutoring for the higher Math and English classes as well as any Science classes. He will be available Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 1-2 pm each week. Tutoring will begin 1-2 weeks after classes resume.

Seeking New TRiO Students

If you know any students that are: first generation, pel grant eligible, have a disability, have attended or been advised to take an AE class, are working toward a degree, or meet some of the criteria above, please have them call Deb as soon a possible. She can then determine eligibility for TRiO SSS and do an intake before Fall semester. We do have some opening in TRiO for students that meet certain criteria as we need to meet our stats.

TRiO Student Survey:

TRiO SSS surveys were sent out to all of you, please make sure you fill it out and return it as soon as possible. Winners will be selected and prizes awarded soon!!
