Handout 19: Individualizing for Bernard

Part I: You will have 30 minutes to complete Part I and Part II of this handout.

Meet Bernard . . .

Instructions: Read and discuss the following information about Bernard, a three-and-half-year-old who is enrolled in a Head Start program that combines home visiting with center sessions.

Bernard lives with his mother and father in a two-bedroom house next door to his paternal grandparents. His parents met in high school. His father works on a neighbor's dairy farm. His mother stays home with Bernard and his younger sister, ten-month-old Trixie. His grandmother and grandfather work at a factory in town. His mother's family is Ukrainian and Irish. His father's family is African-American. Bernard's parents think it's important to appreciate their family's diverse cultural backgrounds.

Some things Bernard can do are:
ride a tricycle
share, if he feels like it
balance blocks
wash his face and hands
run
answer simple questions
set the table
ask for help put on his shoes
pull a wagon
throw and catch a ball
stick with a task, if he's interested
do five- to seven-piece puzzles
draw with markers and crayons
classify by color or size
pound, roll, and squeeze Play-Doh
describe what he's doing
tear paper

Some things Bernard is learning to do are:

build a block tower
wait for a turn
sing songs
skip and hop
use props with Play-Doh
button and zip
pour juice without spilling
turn the pages of a book
classify by characteristics other than color or size
cut with scissors

Sometimes Bernard:

loses his temper
hugs people he likes
spills his juice
falls when he is running
feels sad when away from his home and family
sucks his thumb
has bathroom accidents
alternates using his right and left thumb
cries when it's time to go inside
grabs toys from other children

Bernard especially likes:

feeding the chickens
going to work with his father
painting and drawing
water play
pushing big trucks in the sandbox
being outdoors
playing with his sister
cooking and baking
playing house
stories about machines such as The Little Engine that Could
