Week 1: Analyze how tribes adapted to their environment based on the types of artifacts found.

Week 2: Evaluate how Rock Art was used to record culture and history.
Reading assignments: Jeffers Petroglyphs; The Nett Lake Petroglyph Site.  WebBoard posting and report due.
 
Week 3: Identify the types and uses of arrowheads.
Reading assignment: Native American History in the Mississippi Headwaters Region.  WebBoard posting and report due.
 
Week 4: Interpret the meanings of wampum artifacts.
Reading assignments: Historical Wampum; Wampum Belts as Objects; Changes: Wampum into Writing.  WebBoard posting and report due.
 
Week 5: Describe the basketry process.

Week 6: Distinguish the different bags and pouches and their applications.

Week 7: Identify the distinct clothing characteristics of tribal communities.

Week 8: Explore the development of utensils and food preservation.

Week 9:  Trace the origins and subsequent uses of pottery.

Week 10:  Determine the importance of pipes and pipe bowls.
Reading and on-line museum assignments: Calumet; view First American Art.  WebBoard posting and report due.
 
Week 11: Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of ethnology in preserving Native American music and musical instruments.
Reading assignment: Frances Densmore's 1935 lecture on Native American music. View the Song Catcher - Magic Lantern Show.  WebBoard posting and report due.
 
Week 12: Explore the continued art effort of Native communities.
Post an example of contemporary artwork to the WebBoard.
 
Week 13: Explain the honor given ancestors who have walked on.
Read Chapter 7: "The Feast of the Dead" from "The Jesuits in North America in the Seventeenth Century" by Frances Parkman (1823-1893).  WebBoard posting and report due.
 
Week 14: Demonstrate an understanding of repatriation.
Post the status of your tribe regarding repatriation to the WebBoard.
 
Week 15: Summarize the individual characteristics and global similarities of the art and artifacts of Native American communities.
Submit 2-3 page Final Report.
 
Students are asked to fill out an End of Semester Course and Instructor Evaluation.
